B-BBEE Calculator Guide: Estimating Your B-BBEE Score

Before commissioning a formal B-BBEE verification, many businesses want to estimate their likely B-BBEE score to identify gaps and opportunities. This guide explains the inputs required for each scorecard element, how points are calculated, and what a B-BBEE calculator can and cannot tell you.

What a B-BBEE Calculator Does

A B-BBEE calculator applies the Amended Codes measurement methodology to data you provide, producing an estimated scorecard. It is a planning tool, not an official measurement. The actual score assigned by a verification agency may differ based on interpretation, additional supporting documents, and the specific measurement approaches applied.

Calculators are most useful for: identifying which elements are dragging your score down, modelling the impact of planned changes (such as a new empowerment transaction or increased training spend), and comparing strategic options before committing resources.

Inputs Required for Ownership Calculation

For the Ownership element, you need:

  • Total shares in issue and the number/percentage held by black shareholders
  • Percentage of exercisable voting rights held by black shareholders
  • Percentage of economic interest held by black women
  • Outstanding debt relating to empowerment transactions (for Net Value calculation)
  • Whether any shareholders qualify as black designated groups or black new entrants

Inputs for Management Control

Management Control calculation requires a headcount breakdown by occupational level and race:

  • Number of board members: total, black, black female
  • Top management (C-suite/EXCO): total vs. black count
  • Senior management (SM level): total vs. black count
  • Middle management (MM level): total vs. black count
  • Junior management (JM level): total vs. black count

Inputs for Skills Development

Skills Development requires financial and training data:

  • Annual Leviable Amount (total remuneration for SDL purposes)
  • Total training spend on black employees during the year
  • Breakdown of PIVOTAL spend vs. non-PIVOTAL spend
  • Number of black employees enrolled in learnerships or apprenticeships
  • Number of black employees with disabilities in learning programmes

Inputs for ESD

ESD is the most data-intensive element:

  • Total Measured Procurement Spend (TMPS): total third-party spend excluding certain exemptions
  • TMPS split by supplier B-BBEE level and ownership demographics
  • Net Profit After Tax (NPAT) for Supplier Development and Enterprise Development targets
  • Actual monetary value of Supplier Development contributions during the year
  • Actual monetary value of Enterprise Development contributions during the year

Inputs for SED

SED requires: NPAT, and the total rand value of qualifying SED contributions made during the year with documentation of black beneficiaries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are online B-BBEE calculators accurate?

They provide estimates based on the inputs you provide. Accuracy depends on the quality of your data and how faithfully the calculator implements the Amended Codes. Always use a qualified B-BBEE specialist to validate material estimates before making business decisions.

Can I use a B-BBEE calculator to prepare for verification?

Yes. Running the calculator before your verification helps you identify gaps, gather the right documents, and understand your likely outcome. Share your calculator output with your verification agency as a starting point for discussion.
